Get a Jump Start with Advanced Placement

LCVA is pleased to offer Advanced Placement (AP*) Courses. Our courses are fully approved by the AP Board: “The College Board is pleased to announce that your syllabus has demonstrated that it meets or exceeds the curricular expectations colleges and universities have for your subject.”

AP* courses are college-level classes. The recommended minimum grade level to take AP courses is 11th grade. If a qualifying score is received on the spring exam, participating colleges may offer credit or waive requirements for equivalent college courses.

These courses cost $100 more than normal high school courses, and there is usually a book students are required to purchase.

AP Exam Requirements:

LCVA AP courses are designed for students to achieve college credit. Colleges will only recognize AP credit when students have taken a course and achieved a passing score through the College Board. AP Exams occur at the beginning of May each year. Students should check with the College Board via their website to find the location and date for the spring exam.

AP Biology and Chemistry courses have a lab and/or field experience requirement. As with each curricular requirement in each AP course, this was established through careful deliberation of the courses’ Development Committees and confirmed through a national review of course requirements. The College Board unequivocally supports this requirement, just as it unequivocally supports the concept of flexibility in AP course delivery. Sevenstar requires schools and students to make arrangements for these labs or add this note to the transcript: 

“The noted AP course fulfills all of the components required in an AP science course with the exception of the minimum time required to be spent engaged in hands-on laboratory work/field experiences. Colleges and universities are encouraged to request the required lab notebook or portfolio of lab reports from students enrolled in this course in order to make determinations regarding credit and/or placement.”

AP Exam Reviews

Through our partner, Florida Virtual Schools, LCVA offers test reviews within the AP courses to prepare students for AP Exams in the spring. With access to practice tests, essay prompts, multiple-choice assessments, and study resources, these reviews prepare AP students by providing:

• Test taking strategies specific to the AP exams.
• Real work samples from students with explanations for graded entries.
• Grading rubrics, along with opportunities to apply them to student work.

Homeschooled? Attend a School without AP Courses?

If you are homeschooled or attend a school that does not offer AP courses, you can still take the exams by arranging to test at a participating school. (Students in mainland China should contact international@collegeboard.org.)

a)     Call AP Services no later than March 1 to get the names and telephone numbers of local AP Coordinators. Prepare a list of the exams you plan to take prior to calling so the appropriate coordinators can be identified.

b)     Contact the AP Coordinators identified by AP Services no later than March 15. When calling to arrange testing, make sure to tell the coordinator that you are trying to locate a school willing to administer exams to homeschooled students or students from schools that do not offer AP courses. When taking the test, you will use a different school code so your exam grade(s) will be reported separately from the school at which you test. (Homeschooled students will use the state homeschool code provided by the Coordinator on the day of the exam; students attending schools will use their school code.) Make sure to tell the coordinator the exams you plan to take.

Once you locate a school willing to administer the exams, the school's AP Coordinator is responsible for ordering your exam materials, telling you when and where to appear for the exams, and collecting your fees, which they may adjust to recover additional proctoring or administration costs. That school must administer the exams personally; it cannot forward them to you or your school for handling.

How to Receive College Credit for Sevenstar AP Courses without Taking the AP Exam

Through a partnership with Colorado Christian University (CCU), students who take the following courses using a Sevenstar teacher are eligible to file for a CCU college transcript.

CCU Credit Program Details

• Students can receive a credit on a CCU transcript without having to take an AP test, but only if they choose to participate in this program. 
• Students must earn at least a 73% to be eligible for a CCU college transcript and credit.
• Students must have a Sevenstar teacher facilitate the course.
• To get a CCU college credit, participants must fill out this CCU registration form. There is a $200 fee per course to register, which is due upon registration directly through Colorado Christian University. Once the student completes the course, Sevenstar will send Colorado Christian their grade(s).

Advanced Placement International Diploma

Students who take five AP Exams and score at least a 3 on each of them may qualify for an Advanced Placement International Diploma (APID). The APID is available to students who attend secondary schools outside the US and to US students who apply to universities outside the US. While it does not replace a high school diploma, it does add additional certification of outstanding academic excellence.

AP Scholar Awards

The AP Program offers several AP Scholar Awards to recognize high school students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. Although there is no monetary award, in addition to receiving an award certificate, this achievement is acknowledged on any AP score report that is sent to colleges the following fall.

Award Levels

AP Scholar

Granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.

AP Scholar with Honor

Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Distinction

Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

State AP Scholar

Granted to the one male and one female student in each U.S. state and the District of Columbia with scores of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP Exams, and then the highest average score (at least 3.5) on all AP Exams taken.

National AP Scholar

Granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Students with Disabilities

If a student has documented disabilities, they may be eligible for accommodations on the AP Exams. These include services such as the following: extended time, Braille and 14- and 20-point large-type exams, large-block answer sheets, permission to use a Braille device, computer, typewriter, or magnifying device, a reader to dictate questions, a writer to record responses, or a sign language interpreter to give directions.
